Beyond inches-per-gallon
The classic rule (one inch of fish per gallon) is a starting guess that bioload refinement makes useful: goldfish and plecos produce waste far beyond their length (count 2–3×); slim tetras produce less (0.75–1×). Swimming style matters too — active darters need footprint, hoverers need less. The calculator prices all three.
The nitrogen cycle is the real constraint
Fish waste becomes ammonia (toxic), which bacteria convert to nitrite (toxic), then nitrate (managed by water changes). A tank is "cycled" when the bacterial colonies handle the bioload — 4–6 weeks to establish, stock gradually to grow with. The stocking math assumes a cycled tank; ignoring the cycle voids every rule.
Understocking is the hidden virtue
Slightly understocked tanks are forgiving: water parameters stay stable, equipment has margin, and fish behave naturally. The temptation to fill every inch is the hobby's most common failure — the 80% stocked tank outlives the 110% stocked one by years, with better water and happier fish.
